Are you sure it's actually at half battery life? The little icon in the upper right of the phone is a bit misleading.

Check out:

Settings->About Phone->Status

for a much more accurate battery meter.

Also, be sure you disable wifi and gps if you don't use aren't using them. Htc has a couple of widgets that make turning these on and off quite simple.

Lastly, be sure you are running the latest firmware. You probably are, but check anyway.

I downloaded advanced task manager from the market and killed most background processes and my battery life has tripled almost.
Turning off wifi is a good idea as well. However, GPS has no bearning on battery life. GPS is only used when an app calls for it. Even though the GPS is "always on" it's not active. It's more like in standby mode. For further explanation visit www.mobiledefense.com and read about it there. Speaking of apps mobile defense is also a must have app and relies on GPS but has no bearing on battery life.

I was going to return my Hero but now I am starting to like it more and more. Although I just wish there was a better keyboard for the handset. I doubt a keyboard will never be duplicated to one such as a rival hands...

When the device was first launched there was an issue with text messaging draining the battery. The task killers were a temporary band-aid for a permanant problem. The recent firmware update fixed the sms battery drain. I have since removed my task killer & now I can go 2 days on one charge. At the end of the day, I cycle my Hero then throw it on the charger (to close unneccesary apps). Also, don't run the battery down, then recharge it.

Turning down the brightness in settings should also help. By default its pretty bright; causing much more wear on the battery (when testing some iPhone applications, battery life was significantly drained faster with stock brightness). Also a company http://www.seidioonline.com/category-s/3685.h tm has an 2 extended life battery. One that will fill the stock battery holder, and one that requires an aftermarket back (supplied). I bought the smaller one and will try the results when I receive it.

Actually, I just read about the known bug regarding battery life. It has to do with the native text messaging program. Once I disabled it and went to handcent messaging... the battery life increased 10 fold.

How to check... go to menu>settings>about phone>status and you want to check your "awake" time.

I would have to find the link again for more explanation but that was the culprit for my handset. Also, a new PRL was released so be sure that you have the latest

An issue that was big with the Moment (the other Sprint android phone) was the battery life, but it was found out to be the calibration. The battery drains in minutes, and then would stay low for many hours thereafter.

The fix was just to allow the battery to die completely, and then recharge it to full. Not sure if the Hero has the same issue or if its something else, but it is worth a shot. 🙂
