Actually, it's 65K. I've confirmed this with HTC.

The hardware technically can support 262,000 colors, but Android 1.x only supports 65,000, so - at least with current software - the display is only showing 65,000 colors.

Honestly, I've never been able to tell the difference on any phone. I don't think it's nearly the issue some people make it out to be.

Okay, I'll buy that regarding the display settings within Android. However, why don't you add 65K (supports 262K) the same as you do with other specs?

Agreed, the sheer magnitude of the difference in those numbers makes most people believe it equates to an insane degredation in quality, but it certainly doesn't appear as such. The Hero's screen is very nice, bright, and vivid colors. Perhaps not the sharpest, but even iPhone loses clarity once people put an invisible shield or some other protector on the screen.

BTW, what will 2.0 support? We are set to receive 2.0 sometime in the not so distant future.

Motorola claims the Droid (which ships with 2.0) supports 16.7 million colors. It's not clear if that is a hardware number, though... it may have the same software limitation. I've asked Motorola to clarify, and they haven't answered yet.

I've also asked HTC what their phones will support when they have 2.0. I have yet to hear back on that, either.

Ok thanks. Hey, I also noticed that the Moment's specs state 16-million, but it's running vanilla Android 1.5 also, so it would need to also state 65K (supports 16 million)
