HTC Hero (CDMA)
Great looking phone, except...
Why would they put such obvious effort into making what looks like an almost ideal phone, and then do something ridiculous like not include a flash for the camera. Also, they are kind/smart enough to make the headphone jack a standard 3.5mm, yet make the charging jack proprietary. WTH HTC. Still looks like the (almost) perfect phone for me tho.

HTC doesn't really put flashes on their cell phone cameras. Look at the rest of the lineup on Sprint - no flash.
Also, the charging port looks to be mini USB. This isn't really a proprietary format as other companies (e.g. Motorola) make phones with this style charger as well.
All in all I think the Hero looks to be a great device and I'm definitely going to be looking into it as an upgrade for my outdated Touch.

In two separate reviews I've heard it referred to as an "HTC mini USB port," and it doesn't look quite like mini USB. Hopefully it is, but it just doesn't look like it. Not like it would stop me from getting this phone if those are the only two negatives with it, but it's still disappointing.

Well on my Sprint Touch I have the "HTC Mini USB Charger" yet I use a Motorola RAZR wall charger and mobile charger. The shape of the opening looks bit different but it's wider than that of the Motorola mini USB so those chargers will still fit it.

It's HTC's "ExtUSB" port. It's a little different than a standard mini-USB jack, to accommodate extra HTC accessories, but it is fully compatible with mini-USB plugs.

HTC uses only mini USB chargers, and this type of connection is absolutely NOT any proprietary, as it is used by Motorola, Nokia, RIM, and even LG, to name a few.
The Hero is an excellent phone, I work for sprint and I have already been able to use one.
Great camera, amazing OS, extremely responsive touch screen, and an excellent browser. There is even a free application which you can easily download, to have your background alternate between over a hundred web-cams all around the world. Very, very customizable. Awesome for any tech-y like me!

I know what HTC would say about the flash (because I've talked to them about this very subject): What's the point of a crappy flash?
Let's be honest: most LED flashes are crap. They don't illuminate anything farther away than three or four feet.
There are some useful flashes modules that can be put into phones (of both the LED and Xenon type), but those have very real size, cost, and power trade-offs. They make sense on a camera-oriented phone, but not as much on a general-purpose phone.

While I can somewhat see the logic in that, I would argue that the flash on an actual camera is typically only good to about 15-20 feet, and the flash on my Dare is good (not great, but it at least illuminates and allows me to see what's in the picture) to several feet. Furthermore, many times I need/want to take a picture of something anywhere from half a foot to a couple feet away in low light, where a flash is essential. And finally, a flash on a phone has a very handy secondary function, and that is to act as a flashlight.
