WiFi is generally faster than OTA data.

WiFi can allow you to connect to your printer and print pictures, or email attachments. This of course would be dependent on app support.

Depending on your IT department, WiFi at work could allow you to connect to your companies' email server, even when they don't allow remote connections (because with WiFi you wouldn't have to be remote).

Unless I am mistaken, you don't have to sign up for unlimited data, so you could conceivably still be charged by the megabyte for uploads/downloads.

Again, with app support, you could have a pretty sophisticated WiFi sniffer.

With App support you could connect to a network share to load music files. Or conversely, you could serve media files to a PC in...

Well, my guess is that a lot of apps are going to want internet access. some legitimately (web browser, eg), some maybe not. (does frogger REALLY need to phone home every time you run it?) Those apps that require it, won't work at all unless there is data, whether wifi or evdo.

If you don't have a data plan, VZW charges per megabyte transferred, and you don't always have control over that. Also, MMS messages use your phones data connection, so either they won't work, or (worse) you'll get charge per megabyte for all those sound effects and pictures your friends insist on sending to you.

Another added benifit to the WIFI is the ability to talk and web brows at the same time.

The data plan for this device is not optional either you have to add it. Check with Verizon and see if your employer offers any discounts with them (if thats an option). They might be able to lower the rate a little bit on your minute plan and the data features.

Hope this helps.

Not likely to go down, as data sessions use larger percentages of spectrum when in use than a phone call, so thus take up more (for lack of a better term) "tower space".

VZW also needs money to build out the LTE network and payback the Alltel buyout and 700 MHZ spectrum purchase.

the droid will not activate without a data plan

The downside is that EVERYTHING in the device actively syncs to the internet, and a lot of key functions (voice commands, search, etc) will not function unless it can connect to the internet.

Not everyone has perfect signal at home and at work. You might have a weak/slow EVDO signal at home, or if you live near a major road, it might get bad during rush hour, etc. WiFi gives you another option for fast data in such situations.

WiFi is also generally faster and uses less battery power (during active use) than EVDO. So if you do a lot of sofa surfing on your Droid, you might opt to use WiFi for speed and/or battery reasons.

Also, you might be in an area with limited/no 3G coverage. In that case, WiFi is much faster than 1xRTT
