There are several reasons for this.

1) For every Windows Mobile phone someone buys, VZW has to pay Microsoft a fee per device. With Android, there is no fee to Google. Therefore, it is more profitable for Verizon to sell the Droid over the Omnia 2, or any other Windows Mobile device for that matter.
2) The Omnia 2 is like a Touch Pro 2, it is aimed more towards business(Though the Omnia 2 does have the VCast suite of services). This phone is not even in some stores yet, and believe it or not, some associates do not even know about it, or have never seen the phone(like the VZW kiosk I went to the other night, they were looking at my phone like, can I see that?).
3) If they are going to push the Omnia 2, look for it after Christmas, as VZW will probably stop pushing the Droid as much after then. But by the time that happens, there may be a better handset out shortly after, thus still resulting in an undersold, limited availability Samsung Omnia 2.

So yes, the late release really hurt Samsung. But it was Verizon, not Samsung that did it.
