I'm curious about the phone reception for the 3Gs. I'm considering switching to the new 3Gs and call reception is important !

I've just switched from verizon to att primarily for the iphone (mostly my wife's doing but thats another story). I travel quite a bit for my work and have always been very happy with my verizon service and reception (a 1st generation GZone user).

I'm currently working in Topeka KS. The att service there seems ok. Not sure if it is the phone or the area but I have had a few droppped calls. Frankly, I could probably count on one hand the number of dropped calls I had on two years with the gz one and maybe a couple more driopped calls in about 9 years of verizon service. The first week I had the iphone I probably had three or four but that could have been the specific area I was in.

After having the phone for about a month I can say that...

I too am wondering about this, but it is really hard to determine unless you talk to someone who lives in the same area you do. Cell networks vary greatly from region to region.

If you read C-Net much, they always complain about the reception and data speeds in the San Fran area and they blame AT&T. However, here in St Louis, everyone I know with an iPhone has had no problems what so ever with reception or speed. I think the difference comes down to the network infrastructure and the load on that network. San Fran is a much larger city with very different culture and demographics which probably leads to far more iPhones and other smart phones which will cause lots of problems due to network load. Geography can have a huge influence o...

I had the 3G and I am fortunate that I live in an area with great reception. At my work however, there are areas that do have some difficulty. The 3G performed well even in these areas.

I upgraded to the 3GS and my home reception has not changed. However at work I did notice that in some of those problem areas, my phone went into Edge (which it had rarely done before). There were even a couple of times that it went into GPRS mode (I had to actually look up what the indicator on the phone meant because I had never seen it before).

So in conclusion, the 3GS has slightly worse reception than the 3G.

Verizon is the gold standard for reception. I had Verizon for awhile and they connected everywhere I went without exception. AT&T has g

I got it last week and sometimes people ask me if i'm call from a speakerphone. The reception at my work has gone down. my old moto slvr didn't have a problem at all. sometimes it says 'no service' then i go outside and it's full 3g. i do know that att is updating its network and hopefully it'll happen soon. LA summers are hot & i don't want to keep going outside to surf the web or make phone calls.

AT&T Network needs to be improved. Inside buildings AT&T's network does not seem to penetrate very well. I was glad to see they are upgrading, but I will wait an see.

iPhone call quality is great. If AT&Ts network was better I would be thrilled. I am keeping my fingers crossed. If Verizon gets the iPhone...I'll drop AT&T instantly! (I will pay the penalty gladly to get more consistent reception)

Likewise, if Verizon were to get the iPhone 3gs then I would switch in a heartbeat, damn the penalty.
