the back light is supposed to go off when you have a call. there is a square light sensor in the top left corner of the phone so when you put it up to your face the back light goes off... the problem being if you are in a room that is not well lit you will find that your touch keypad does not come back up and you may have to use the inside of your phone. that can be an irritating flaw but that has been the issue for me....
