Well, it turns out the eBayer who sold me the phone as "brand new" was lying! 
I noticed a small scratch on the base, so I figured maybe the phone was damaged. I sent the phone away to a third party repair center and they replaced the microphone as well as the main board, both of which were damaged.
The phone works great now! My only complaint is that it sometimes gets lost in my pocket.
