OK. Had the phone for 5 months and I can finally answer my own question: The -2 refers to the NAM (North American) version of the phone. Dunno if there was ever a straight E63 or E63-1 but the E63-2 works great with AT&T network and is a sweet & comparativly cheap little smartphone. Quite a workhorse.
