No 3g?

Why won't this phone be 3g? Is there a chance the carriers can make theirs as 3g phones, or will this not happen?

I do not wan't the bold, but I would hate to buy a brand new blackberry, and not be able to take advantage of the 3g network and data speed.

Is there a noticeable difference if the phone will not have 3g? Also, what why would someone get this over the Bold, or vice versa?

"take advantage of the 3G network"

Atts 3g network is garbage, so trust me, the enhanced edge speeds should be pretty solid.

and people will choose this over the bold due to the size and form factor.

And believe it or not, some people dont want 3G because their network isnt that strong (I know people with att bolds, that turn off their 3G)

They turn off their 3G? That's interesting because on the AT&T Bold you CANNOT turn off the 3G, there is no option to do so. So I'm wondering if they have a special program to do so, or maybe an unlocked Bold? My 3G works just fine in my area, AS WELL AS other areas around the country. I've never had a single problem with it. Do you have a Bold on AT&T's 3G network? If not then I don't believe your statement has validity.

I'm not trying to spark a fight, just asking a simple question.

I like ATT cause they use their 3G for voice (among other things) witch makes for great voice quality.
But as 'cwcanty' said ATT's 3G isn't as good as others.
I've recently spent some time in class for work. And every day I'd walk into the classroom my phone would drop from 3G to EDGE like clockwork. And again when there is inclement weather my phone says 3G but I get the tell tail cell phone warble while I'm talking on it.
Witch tells me that ATT's 3G service is good but not as strong as others.

Unfortunately, when ATT got their hands on the Bold, they took away the ability to turn off 3G under "Manage Connections". There are endless reasons why they decided to do this but the biggest reason of all is because ATT are bloodsucking b**tards. (Sadly, I work for them)

I am currently using the BOLD and I find myself using Wifi much more often than 3G. The 3G network in most major metropolitan areas are great. I live in San Francisco and I spent last weekend in LA and San Diego with no major problems with my browsing speed. There are occasional lapses where I would switch to EDGE, but overall it was fine. ATT 3G is nowhere near perfect, there are blind spots. There are rare times where I would drop to GPRS!??!?!

3G coverage outs...

The friend I was refering to has an unlocked bold and he told me that he turns it off sometimes because the increased data speeds are not really an issue for him.

Att 3G network is okay, its just not as expansive and verizons (IMO).

Being able to roam off other CDMA EV-DO networks certainly has its advantages... you have 3 decent sized companies building out EV-DO (Verizon, Sprint, Alltel) and guess who lets AT&T roam on their UMTS network? NO ONE.

I think its pretty impressive how much 3G coverage has rolled out in the past year.

I have a Bold and don't run into issues. I'll take simultaneous voice/data any day over EDGE!

Something about this is not right. The ability to turn 3G on/off is not affected by the phone being locked or unlocked. It is probably a setting in either the phone's base firmware or it's pushed through a service book. I unlocked my phone and the Manage Connection options did not chance. I'm not aware of any way to change the setting, even if you use the phone from another carrier.

I would love the chance to turn off 3G. My battery lasts all day at least, but it would be nice not have HAVE to charge it every night. I've had nothing but near-perfect coverage in the Detroit area. I can count on one hand the number of times my phone hasn't had 3G coverage with full bars (got my Bold 11/4).

Could it be that the carrier removed that option, but they managed to purchase an unbranded unlocked bold?

Obviously unlocking the carrier one wouldn't give you any more options if they removed it..

I haven't done any research on the availability of the bold w/o AT&T branding, but it's the first thing I thought of.

I'll buy the "expansive" part....but not your initial statement. 🙂

However....I have repeatedly sat next to VZW people (and I was VZW for a long time) and my fruity-phone (and currently my Xperia X1) will load pages and surf faster than them. Granted....they can surf in more places. 🙂

Day-to-day, for me.....I see much faster performance.

I know, I know...I just better not move out of my little corner of the world!! 🙂

number 1 reason why, SIZE
2. pixels are slightly better
3. 3.2mp camera with auto focus and flash
4. SIZE
5. battery life

difference? id say the bold is 5-10% faster.
3g? they both feel the same to me.

The main difference between this phone and the Bold is 3G. If you want 3G, get the Bold. Having another (cheaper, smaller) GSM-only option is part of having a diverse product lineup.

When this comes to CDMA networks, it almost certainly will be 3G (EVDO), like the CDMA Pearls and Curves before it.

It is understandable that the 8900 is a non-3G device. The Bold came out 11/14/08 and Blackberry is not about to come out with another product to compete with the bold.

With that said, I want to note that a lot of Blackberry users do not use the browsing feature on their phone. Most of my customers (I work at ATT, sad, but true) buy Blackberry's to utilize the push email, text, and IM feature. In this case, EDGE is more than enough to handle this. There are another group of customers that uses Blackberry's for the fact that they are very dependable phones with a full qwerty keyboard.

My opinion is that if you want 3G, go with the bold. Just remember the price is $100 more. If you want a great phone, camera, organizer, qwerty,...

Face it, if you get a blackberry of any kind your going to get or in some cases, required to get the data package right?? AT&T's blackberry data is $30 and $50 for unlimited data + text. If you got the curve 8900 you'll just be getting an EDGE phone... which is slower connection, not much but emails and spending that much money a month.

OR.. You can get the bold, which has 3G that gives you faster speeds, plus you can stream videos, live music, and other stuff too. AND your paying the same price either $30 or $50.

I dont know about you guys, but if I'm paying AT&T $50 dollars for unlimited data and text, I would go with the Bold that would give me more features. Remember, curve doesnt have streaming videos.

How can you say the Curve doesn't have streaming videos when I can do it on my phone? That confuses me. Maybe you need to update your Curve.

T-Mobile's Blackberry Data packages are $25 and $35. the $35 package includes unlimited data and messaging.

While 3G is faster than EDGE, the price difference makes up for the it. Keep in mind the blackberry packages are the same for their phones that are 3G as well.

as other have said, the 8900 curve can do everything the Bold can, just not as fast.

Since Blackberry isn't ready to commit to T-Mobile 3G network, this is T-Mobile's "bold" option for their users.

What I meant by streaming video, live video from the net. I know every blackberry you can add video from your own computer no doubt, but all the blackberries that I seen on EDGE, either on AT&T or T-mobile, cant stream live video from the net, example AT&T's mobiTV. Live TV from the net. Cellular video.
