When texting on the BB STORM, can you type more than 160 Characters in a text message and the phone will send it or will it stop you at 160 Characters and you have to send that text and then begin another one? And are the messages threaded or are they all individual?

mine stops at 160, and wont let you continue. it might be a setting (?) but thats when mine stops.

as far as 'threaded', kinda. its how you set it up. mine shows me in and out going messages, but when you click the message, it shows you all the recent sent and recieved messages. though i dont know if thats considered true 'threaded sms'

hope this info helps

The 160 characters is a txt message issue, not a BB issue. Most phones that allow you to type 160+ characters will send that message as two or more messages.

Yes the messages are threaded. What what I think willv is saying is that you can set your message folders to display all your in coming and out going messages or just in coming.

Like jharo said, its a text issue. not a phone issue.

The cellular network is the reason for the 160 limit, it has to do with how text messages are passed through the cellular network.
And its partly why you can still receive a text sometimes where you don't get data coverage.

i think its pda's, because on my lg dare, i could have 7 pages, or 160 characters x 7 pages in 1 sms text. i swear my xv6800 was the same way. my girlfriends moto q9c can send more then 160, it just auto starts a new text.

for example, on my dare i can type 200, and it will send 2 sms, one with the first 160, the other with the extra 40.

with my storm, i hit the 160 mark and it says 'full' or something like it.

so its a storm thing. but i dont think its a problem, just how the phone is.

anyone with a curve or pearl can confirm this? again, i dont know if its a blackberry thing, or new pda thing, but my g/f's q can do more then 160 and my dare could, but not the storm.

umm...that's what I said. If you want to send more than 160 characters, you can do it by sending it as a mms.

EVERY Verizon phone I've had has only allowed me to send a SMS message with 160 characters. HOWEVER, if I were sending the text to a VERIZON number, it would just let me text a novel if I pleased, and my VERIZON recipient would get ONE LONG massive text.

So I know that when sending an SMS text to a NON-VERIZON person, you can only type 160 characters. IF you were to type more than 160 characters and send the message, IMMEDIATELY you'll get a message saying that since you sent a text to a NON-VERIZON person, your recipient will ONLY see the 1st 160 characters.

Not sure how the Storm does the sms, but from the responses I've been reading, it automatically STOPS at 160 characters.

Why does Verizon do that??? When I had T-Mobile for ...

I was under the impression that text msgs from Verizon accounts to non-Verizon customers limit the transmission to 160 characters. I have sent txt msgs to Verizon recipients without the limitation. Am I correct?

I don't think it matters who you send the sms to, it still stops at 160 characters. I had to send 2 seperate the other day to my wife and we are both with Verizon.

Yeah, I get the same thing when I reach the 160 limit. "FIELD IS FULL". Kind of begins to be a pain and you have to now get to the point, if possible, of your text. Bummer. Guess it's a Verizon thing because I had a Dare as well and it would let you type more but was sent out as 2 seperate messages. Still lovin my Storm though!!

I need to find the original article and post a link to it so everyone can read for themselves.

If your sending over 160 then your phone is splitting the message into multiple messages to the reciever.

I heard this discussed in detail on BuzzOutLoud
and Its also here on About.com and HowStuffWorks.com

Here is a copy and paste from
HOWSTUFFWORKS.com

Why 160 Characters?
SMS was designed to deliver short bursts of data such as numerical pages. To avoid overloading the system with more than the standard forward-and-response operation, the inventors of SMS agreed on a 160-character maximum message size.
But the 160-character limit is not absolute. Length limitations may vary depending on the network...
