Yes, I am sad to say that you are correct. However, I've been in contact with Nextel/Sprint support and they tell me that the issue should be corrected within the next 2/3 weeks. In the meantime, I found a tech (luckily) that walked me through some steps to change a few settings and I've been sending/receiving text messages with no problems lately . . . knock on wood . . .
