For Those Who Have the G1

Hello Everyone!

I don't usually post on Phone Scoop, but I've got a couple of specific questions, and what better place to ask than on Phone Scoop...

So I have had a Blackberry Pearl for 2 years now, I got it when it first came out. Little by little, its gotten 'older' trackball ring is missing, the side bars are chipped, the screen is a teensy bit scratched, etc. and I am also out of my contract.

So, needless to say I am shopping for a new phone. Before the G1 came out I was set on getting a Blackberry Curve, or even waiting till a better Blackberry model would be offered by T-Mobile. Before the G1, I was sure that I would be a Blackberry fan girl forever.

But then the mobile world changed and the G1 was released. 😲 I do ab...

I don't have, nor do I really want a G1. And while I think android is great start for a smartphone OS, Im not sure the G1 is the android device I would pick up.

If I were you, coming from a blackberry, I would stick with a blackberry. It sounds like the G1 is lacking in several key areas and I think after the "newness" of the G1 wears off, your left with a phone that just isn't as capable as a good blackberry--In my opinion.

T-mobile is supposed to getting the new blackberry curve 2 (8900) hopefully by the end of the year or in early 2009. Check out crackberry.com for more info and they do have a video review available.

Once again, im not really bashing the G1, I just think that coming from a BB, if you like that platform--I woul...

Thanks for the heads up! I didn't know about T-Mobile's anticipated release of the 8900 in December...I looked it up and I really like everything about it.

I think you're right, G1 is not the device I should get, if I ever decide to go Android. I like the things that it can do software wise, but the device is not something I can be happy with.

Thanks so much for your response, it helps ALOT!! 🙂

No problem!

I have been using blackberries for about a year now, and after the reviews of the G1 im pretty sure I would miss my BB after about 1 day with the G1, lol.

Good luck with your search.

look i think if the features suite your need go for it, if it doesnt then stick with what you know and like previously. personally i like the g1 because i am a programer and i like the fact that i can do 100 times more than wht the blackberry can do. the potential of the g1 is only limited to the holder knowledge of the device.

Yeah, but for those of us that need a device based on efficiency and ease of use, the Blackberry is great. I have a lot of respect for android and I think android and apple will push RIM to do more with their operating systems. Competition is great and the better android gets, the better all manufacturers will have to get.

apple suck first of all. the g1 had some rim heriditories such as double tap space and it put a period and capitalizes next letter. only the g1 and rim devices has that feature.
efficiency wise both device has matching efficiency in term usability. but g1 tops rim on data transfer. (linux top rim on that.) linux was designed to to faster on data. also the fact that the g1 is capable of doing push soon business will take the g1 as a company device (g2 device has enterprise push). overall. they are both efficient the only diffence is what you like.

ps: look at palm and rim being rivals lol u will get a kick out of that

huh?

What have you ever used a blackberry? No way its as efficient as a blackberry for heavy, power users. NO WAY! Im not saying its a bad phone, but if you have to hammer out 150 texts, and 150 emails a day, I guarantee you will spend more time doing that on the G1.

And as far as data speeds. I would put a blackberry storm with Rev A up against any tmobile 3G enabled device in terms of speed.

And apple doesn't suck. I dont have an iphone, nor do I want one. But apple completely changed the game in terms of smart phones and pushed every carrier to do better. Its also one of the best selling smartphones in the world. So no, it doesnt "suck"

yes i work with blackberries all day. and you are wrong on that level. the g1 data handling is better than any mobile device out there because of it core kernel. blackberry does have a good data transfer rate and messaging rate that is because it buffers and stores. that is why when u load docs and images it look for space and remove old stuff to make room for it. g1 doesnt. and also dont compair Rev A with 3g totally different frequency and that is only limited here in the usa. check japan 3g gsm network it ten times faster then that of any where else in the world. these network speed are limited by every country's FDA regulations

I have a G1 and I had a pearl.

There are ups and downs to the G1, the web browser is great, gmail is instant and overall its well put together.

The battery life is the only real downside, heavy use kills it. If you don't adjust some settings it'll drain sitting on your desk. I'm hoping that its a software issue and can be fixed, but I have to keep my charger with me.

Coming from the pearl you'll be dissapointed with the battery life, I used my pearl heavily all day and maybe only used half the charge.

Besides the battery issue I love the phone. Its good now but it will be great once more apps are available. It is not an Iphone or a business phone, but after more is released for android you will be able to tailor the phone to your...

Hi there!

I've read on these forums that the battery life for the G1 is very low. You're right, I am used to the battery life on my Pearl, and it would be hard to transition to a device that doesnt meet that same level of efficiency...

Imagine if years down the road RIM decides to go with an Android Blackberry??? Whoa...they need to join the Open Handset Alliance!

Thanks for the advice. 🙂

I have the G1 for about a week now and its a great phone. The biggest complaint is the battery. It doesn't last the whole day for me. But that is going to happen with a lot of 3G phones.

As for the bluetooth its not finished yet and google even said so. The issues with the bluetooth is purely software and can be fixed in an update.

The best advice I can give is go into a store and play with the phone. See how you like it.

You're right, there's no substitute for hands on tinkering...

I've gotten helpful advice here, and I think I may just wait for the 8900...it's like my Pearl on steroids! 😁

Do you work for T-Mobile?

Really depends on what your lookinf=g for. g1 camera is not the best but its okay. takes a little longer to take pictures thats what i've realized when i took them. typing was a little difficult but nothing you cant get used to over time. its more of an off balance feeling while typing due to the home keys not moving i have an HTC phone and my keys are side-by-side the keys on the G1 are like the sidekick keys with the little space between them. so if you've owned a sidekick you'll be used to the typing style. if you're used to to-do list or taking notes or any of that sort with your blackberyy you might want keep your blackberry handy because the G1 doesnt have any of that yet. might have to wait for the application to come out. either way...

Thank T-mobile for their buyers remorse! I don't think I will waste my time though...even though Android is pretty sweet, their choice of handset was pretty haste. Sometimes, its the little things that count! 😉

as for the camera, it is like a digital camera, you hold it half way down to focus and then when focused push all the way down

If you mean a picture of lets say her 1st steps, no, you probably wont make it in time. Your dog leaping up to catch a ball? probably not. Theres a few seconds delay which will prevent a rapid or quick snap shot. However, aside from that delay, I would say yes, it works just like a digital.

So, I guess, "Yes & No" is a suitable answer.

1. If you were me, would you buy a Curve (or wait for a couple of months for another TMobile BlackBerry release, if any) or buy a G1?
Well, to be honest, you have had your pearl for 2 years and seem happy with it, why not stay with pearls? try the Pearl Flip out. The Curve is a good phone and theres another Blackberry called the 8800 you might wanna look into. However, the question was If I was you. Well, If I was you, I would 1st look into the Pearl Flip and see if that works for you, then the 8800, then the G1 and lastly the Curve. The G1 is not a blackberry and will operate differently then what you've grown to.

Theres also another phone coming out in Nov called the T919 (its like the ...
