I'm pretty sure you must have the data plan to use the G1. Most of the apps need to access the Internet. I could be wrong but i would call customer service to make sure.

From what I've heard, TMO has been shutting data down on people using this phone on incorrect plans, and require you to adopt the G1/myTouch plan.

if u dont wnt tmobile data plan just get it for a week to activate the device then use only wifi to connect and disconnect or cancel ur data

I had to get the g1 plan to use the phone but I can still use my smart phone also using g1 data. I switch between my dash 3g and g1 often and there is no interuption with data betwen the two phones.

Of course TMO or any other carrier doesn't care if you use a cheaper rate phone on a premium plan.

they kinda care for the fact that smart phones use more data on their network than a regular phone that why they got a lower plan for regular phone.... the major reason is that gsm has a hard time pushing data...cause of the amount of channels needed for it...

If it's a used phone, that means it was already activated, right? Plus, if it's also unlocked. So I should be able to pop in any sim card and use it right away, right?
