Already on contract?

moto69

So what's the deal for those of us who already are on a contract and want to purchase this phone? I keep reading different things some saying that you just have to up your contract and pay the new prices and others say that you will have to pay a lot more than what they will be offered for? Any help is much appreciated! 😁

It's not looking too good for those current at&t users who aren't eligible for an upgrade. I am in the same boat.

there may be a work around to all of this upgrade discontentment. I have this idea that people who want the 3g iphone and currently have a non-iphone headset only have to activate a new sim card in a 2g phone and put the iphone data plan on their account. This will do two things.

1: Automatically update your contact when they reactivate with a 2G iphone
2: Automatically make them eligible to upgrade to the 3G iphone.

If i recall correctly the Iphone was the only handset that you can upgrade to without being the the contract "sweet spot" By using any iphone and upgrading your account you should be eligible to upgrade to the new 3G iphone with not issues. You should be able now to skip the soon to be unfavorable non commitment price w...

even though that does sound like it could work the new phones still have to be synced to a computer. Thats how you get your updates. so if i had to guess thats probably not going to happen.

No after you upgrade to an old iphone either at home using an old iphone or the one in the store you would then procede to upgrade to the 3G phone. That will allow you to take advantage of ATT allowing anyone with an Iphone to upgrade to the 3G iphone. No where does it state a specific period of time one needs to have an iphone 2g to be able to go to the 3g

ok i get what your saying. i got a little mixed up. But after re-reading what you said...you dont need to have had a old iphone to buy the new one. As far as data plans go, i believe any iphone activated on or after july 11 will have to accept the $30 iphone package regardless of model.

True but you can buy a 3g iPhone if you have a 2g one regardless of tenure of service. Meaning no matter when you bought your iphone you can be able to upgrade. Other folks won't be as lucky because att still hasn't formulated what they are going to charge non iPhone customers that are not eligible

I copied this from the ATT site and assume it applies to the iphone too.
Question:
Does the early termination fee apply to each line on FamilyTalk or just to the plan itself?
Answer:
Each phone on your FamilyTalk account has its own contract. Customers who cancel their service with AT&T before the end of the contract term will pay an Early Termination Fee (ETF) of $175 for each wireless telephone number associated with the service.

Effective May 25, 2008, new and renewing AT&T wireless customers who enter into 1- or 2-year service agreements will no longer be required to pay a single, flat ETF. Instead, the $175 ETF will be lowered by $5.00 every month for the term of the contract.

If you have questions about your AT&T contrac...

According to this I'll owe an extra $60 to upgrade my iPhone. I can live with that.
Brian
Again copied from ATT web site.
Question:
What is the pro-rated (declining) Early
Termination Fee?
What is the pro-rated ETF?
Answer:
Effective May 25, 2008, new and renewing AT&T wireless customers who enter into 1- or 2-year service agreements will no longer be required to pay a single, flat Early Termination Fee (ETF). Instead, the $175 ETF will be lowered by $5.00 every month for the term of the contract. This change will provide our customers with even greater choice when it comes to their wireless needs.

Customers who upgrade or renew their contract prior to May 25th will not be eligible for the new pro-rated Early Termination Fee...

Customers with 2G iPhones will be able to upgrade to the the new phone regardless of contract tenure as long as the account is in good standing. You will have to pay the new data rate (30/mo..same as the Bberry and PDA plans), and sign new 24 mo contract.

QUOTED............

Note: When the 3G device launches, all active postpaid customers in good standing with a 2G iPhone will be eligible to receive the qualified upgrade pricing for a 3G device regardless of service tenure. (Customers that would not otherwise be eligible due to tenure will be made eligible at launch).

BE MADE ELIGIBLE AT LAUNCH,IM GUESSING THAT MEANS REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOUR AT IN ANY CONTRACT WITH ANY PHONE ON JULY 11TH YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO PURCHASE AT 199 OR 299 AND SIGN ANOTHER 2 YEAR CONTRACT,ATLEAST THATS THE WAY I UNDERSTAND IT!!!

Ok people, you want the official word, here it is (and yes, i do work for att). It doesn't matter if you are 1 month or 1 year into your contract, if you buy an iphone, apon activation your contact will automatically be re-signed and you will suffer no penalty if you were still under contract. Once you activate the phone, your account will automatically be assigned an iphone package for $30. Now up to now, we have not been made aware about the different feature plans for 1.0 and 2.0 after July 11. The floating word now is custy's with iphone 1.0 will keep there $20 package and long as the keep the phone. Of course, after July 11, the 2.0 updates will be available so they will still almost be the same phone. Dont take this as me protecting th...

But what you have been told this is only for current IPHONE 1.0 owners.
ATT has not said what about us that do not have iphone and are only in their first year of a two year contract?
Also rumors are the data plan for 30 is just like the smartphone /pda plans yes unlimited data but no TXT mess is included?

Thanks I look foward to your answers.

if i had to guess, i would probably say that sms will not be included however you only got 200 with the original data plan...i go though that in less than a week lol. as far as your contract goes, it doesn't matter in you have had a shine for 6 months. If you want an iphone, you go purchase one. At the time of activation, you will automatically be resigning a new 2-year contract. It doesnt matter if you are a current iphone user or not. Now of course this is our idea how it will all work. None of this is set in stone. As soon as i get some more info i will post it up.

"will automatically be resigning a new 2-year contract."

this means that an additional 2 years will be added to the old contract or the original 2 years contract will be reseted to day 1 of the 2 years contract?

There is no word as of yet. What's going to happen to people that want to buy an iphone out of contract or needing a upgrade sooner. Check your news in the next 3-4 weeks I am sure it will be announced. But the new and great thing is that the new 3G will be activated in Store not on itunes.
AT&T and Apple is trying to avoid people buying phone and unlocking and putting on services like TMobile etc. Everything is changing on how we sell the iphone. Data pkg will be 15.00 more if you add the 200 text messages you used to get with the 2g data plan. Less for the phone and more monthly costs. You want a faster phone with GPS, you pay for it says AT&T and APPLE.
I know there are dozen of other things that apple could of added to the new iphone...

Buying the phone at the no commitment price is supposed to keep you from signing another 2 year contract from what I understand. AT&T will be discounting the new iPhone so that more people can afford it. Those people who choose to buy the phone at the discounted rate will renew their contract and all those who are coming over to AT&T from other carriers will automatically get the discounted rate. As of now if you setup a new account with any company it starts a 2 year agreement regardless of if you bought your phone at no commitment price or not. This is something companies are working on as we speak.
