MMS - Firmware upgradable?

Okay, so I was seriously considering the new iPhone, that is until they came out and STILL do not offer mms, which is something I use quite regularly. Since it doesn't I will most likely not be going with the iPhone. However, does anyone know if this is a feature that can be added by firmware/software updates that Apple releases on occasion? of is it a hardware thing?

Any information is appreciated, thanks in advance...

MMS works depending on how the network is configured. Sprint and Verizon networks are configured for MMS that is why the WinMo phones that did not have MMS worked after a hack was developed. However, I believe Apple has completely blocked that feature so I doubt a hack can be made.

If you have a jailbroken iphone (version1 of course) you can install a program called swirly MMS and it works. Soooo...I'm assuming that there will be a third party app available (for purchase of course) that allows MMS. It is purely software and not Hardware

That's what I was looking for, it's a shame they didn't have it in by default. Seems fairly common sens to me. Thanks Chris

It's not a hardware thing. It IS software. It can THEORETICALLY be provided by a software update, HOWEVER...

Not adding MMS was deliberate, and I wouldn't expect Apple to do an about face on it. Apple seems to regard it as a bass-ackwards way to send pictures on a device with the capability to email them.

If an MMS solution emerges on the iPhone, it will almost certainly be a third party effort.

It is a bass ackwards way of doing it. My biggest beef is how people tell me how awesome MMS is as a feature and everytime I go and send a pic MMS it takes three or four trys on my blackberry, and it will go...OR...I attach it as an email and it goes out. I mean its so bad, that i don't even care if i have it on non PDA/Smartphones, and I live in a 3G area.

MMS has just never been consistent, ever. I always love it when a few days later someone asks if I got the picture they sent me. I would just assume send by email.

It's software as well as network, as for why Apple blocks or why they won't add a feature like MMS?... Ask them. Having the ability to send a picture or video via MMS vs email is night and day. Email takes for ever, not to mention you have to download an attachment you've received via email. With native MMS is instantaneous attachment opens right then and there.
