I would recommend a Palm Centro for that. Which doesn't require you to buy a Data Plan to buy the phone.

Bitpim however has trouble with some phones, like the Samsung Rant, because they haven't "worked" with it yet. Im afraid that the Samsung Rant won't work as the best Calender/Organizer phone.
