Well, that's not gonna fly. It's like this
Option 1. Make a CDMA version that might sell to at most 2 countries, and get the phone crippled by the carriers (ahem, VZW, ahem)
Option 2. Leave it as GSM device with European 3G, that could actually sell at 4 (or 6) continents.
It's not gonna affect Nokia if you turn away from them.
There is a good chance they will make a American 3G version of this phone.
