First, make sure that you choose "exit application" for any app that you stop using. GPS is a huge energy hog.
Second, either keep it in its holster or keep it out. Pulling it out to check the time turns on the backlight and that's another big energy hog
Third, pull the battery every once in a while. I have quickpull installed and scheduled to go every night when I'm asleep and the full reboot helps keep it fresh because it shuts down everything that's not essential
Fourth, if you can afford to do so, use your "auto-on-off" feature to keep the phone off when you're not going to be using it. If you don't need to get calls when you're asleep, turn the phone off. If you go to bed at the same time every night, set your auto-off for bedtime and auto-on for about 10 minutes before your alarm goes off. Your nightly emails and messages may wake you up anyway.
Seriously, I've had my BB 8330 for over a year and I love the damn thing. It's sturdy. I think I could put it in its holster and hit it with a golf club and it would keep running.
There's never been an issue with software that I couldn't fix with a reboot and reinstall of the offending app.
