If a newby were going to choose one of the above phones, which would you recommend?

Well, most people will think this is an easy answer (Tilt). But, for a "newby" i would honestly have to say that the Vu would better suit you. It's very easy to use and it has some cool features. If you want something a little heavier, go with the Tilt.

its really a night and day choice. The tilt is a full windows mobile pda. the vu is a cool touch screen non pda. Its like choosing a honda vs cadillac. if you want a cool mobile tv get the vu if you want a sweet pda get the tilt. and as feo said the vu is definatly easier to use if you are a newbie.

I would lean heavily toward the Tilt, no questions, if someone is tech savvy enough to find their way here, they will get over the WM learning curve.

The price of the Vu is insane, and even worse if you want one off contract. I played with a live Vu in an AT&T Store, I wanted to be, but was unimpressed. Its a closed system, with a closed OS. Much better off with a Tilt, Blackberry or some Symbian based Nokia.

Saying this, neither device is perfect, but at least with the Tilt, there is both support from HTC/AT&T and from the development community. It seems to be built far better.
