"Unlock code"???

That's what the 'tech support' guy at the verizon store said... i asked him about getting a 'prepaid sim card' when you're in another country (the cheapest option) and he said it doesn't work that way... He said you have to get the sim card from verizon ahead of time... He knew nothing about how to unlock the phone... and claim that it can't be done... 🙄

I've been in touch with Verizon Global Services a number of times. The reps there all tell me that "they've heard" that Verizon will give out the subsidy unlock code so that you can use an overseas sim card with this phone. However, none of them knows when that will happen. Frankly, if Verizon intends to do so, I don't understand why it hasn't done so already. If it doesn't do so by the end of my 30 day trial period, I'm tempted to return the phone.

In the meantime, yes, you can use the Verizon sim, although, as you've stated, it's far too expensive a way to make a call while in a foreign country. Better to buy an unlocked GSM phone than to pay Verizon's expensive per minute calling charge.

Not until Verizon furnishes the subsidy unlock code for your z6c.

Yes you can!! If your SIM is a Verizon SIM, call global tech support and they will provision the SIM for your Z6C - great phone - 888-844-0395

Mine is unlocked. They gave me a code on December 13th. I tried it with my third party Passport SIM and after entering their 8 digit unlock code it never asks for it again. Verizon also sent me their free Global Support Pack SIM.

Call their Global support group in South Carolina. Eventually they will start giving everyone a subsidy code to unlock the phone. It does not need to be unlocked to work their own SIM.

You mean that your third party card worked with their regular unlock code?

Normally you're right in that Verizon does not use SIM cards. In this instance, however, the phone works on the two European GSM bands in addition to the two Verizon digital CDMA bands. Consequently, the phone utilizes a SIM card with respect to the two GSM bands.

The SIM card has Verizon's logo on it, but it is a Vodafone SIM.

So, it would seem that it is possible to get another SIM from a local cell phone provider internationally, and then use both my US local # and the international one on the same device?

Does anyone have an idea as to when an unlock code might be available?? Is this something Verizon will give up eventually?

If you use your Verizon SIM internationally, you will retain your U.S. phone number, but if you use your internationally purchased SIM, you will be given a different phone number, unique to that SIM.

Verizon says that it will give out the subsidy unlock codes, but that so far those codes have not been generated (at least according to my latest call to Verizon Global services, which was today). Estimates as to when vary all over the place, depending upon which rep you speak with. Nobody knows for sure.

On Howardforums, some have said that they've received the unlock codes, but I don't think that this has been widespread.

The unlock codes are now available. However, some phones have faulty firmware which do not allow the codes to work. Verizon is replacing those phones free of charge. You will need to have a third pary foreign SIM inserted in your phone to allow the code request to be generated. I am getting my replacement tomorrow and, when the unlock code has worked, will post the result here.

I was told by Verizon that any third party SIM will work for unlocking purposes, not just a foreign SIM. I asked specifically whether a T Mobile SIM would work for this purpose (even though you cannot get a signal from it) and the Verizon rep said yes. I hope he knows what he was talking about. I'm going to try it that way.

wait a minute. I thought you can't use any GSM service in north america (according to the CNET review) because the GSM freq. bands in north america are different than the ones in europe or asia. I thought I heard that you can't use t-mobile or at&t service on it.... 👀

You are correct. If you use a T Mobile SIM, for instance, there will be no signal. However, I used the T Mobile SIM for purposes of prompting the phone's request for the subsidy unlock code. It seemed to work for that purpose and I now believe I have an unlocked phone for GSM purposes. I could not, however, make any calls using that SIM.

🙂 Got my replacement, called global services who generated the unlock code for the new phone - it worked!! 😁 Kudos to the great Verizon staff who worked with me to resolve the problem. the phone works perfectly although I wish the headset and speakerphone were louder. I'm sure Verizon will address this in future updates.......... 😁
