Free apps for the GPS verses ATT Navigator-Telenav

by ianr    Mar 31, 2009, 3:11 PM

I noticed the GPS sections of this forum are rather old.
I just got the BJ2 to replace my old BJ and was disheartened to see ATT team with Telenav to extract even more dollars from my pocket. Did a little research and found that Google has a nice mapping section for Win Mobile and found it runs on the BJ2
This is the link. http://www.google.com/mobile/default/maps-c.h tml
Give them your mobile # and they will send a download app.

The one thing I found that makes it a little difficult is how ATT and Samsung control the GPS.
They turn it on with a separate app that is run in the background by "ATT Navigator" I think it is "ATT GPS". Google apparently doesn't know how to actually turn on the GPS (it will look for it forever)so you need to run ATT Navigator until the GPS is going. That is immediately after the screen that says don't use the program and drive or something like that. At that point you can exit "ATT Navigator". Win Mobile doesn't turn the GPS unit off again. Now Google will find the GPS and pinpoint you. I like using the satellite view. Zoom in and out with the volume control on the side.

BTW I usually use the "Task Monitor" to kill all the running programs if I'm not going to us the GPS for some time cuz it drains the battery.
Enjoy Cool
