I don't have the 8120, but i have the 8100. Since the user interface is largely unchanged I am quite sure in my answers.

"Independent" means that the phone has voice recognition software where you do not need to (and cannot) record your voice to use the feature. That said, I can assure you that the recognition is quite better and more advanced than the Nokia phone. In my experiences as long as you are in a quite place (e.g., your car or in the office) you won't have a problem. It understands some accents and different intonations.

About the ringtones. You can set custom ringtones for your contacts. However, I think if you do that the ringtone will be the same whether the person calls or messages. Which was a little annoying for me.

But back to the voice dialing feature. I think you will have trouble finding phones that have user specific voice dialing (i.e., you record the names manually prior to use). Most companies are moving away from that and towards the user independent voice dialing where you can use it "out of the box".
