Sorry, Verizon won't even activate a Blackberry device without a Blackberry plan.

That's crap there is no way Verizon forces you to pay for a Blackberry plan and refuses to activate it unless.

You should check your information before posting. Try activating a Blackberry without a Blackberry plan and you'll see for yourself. A quick call to customer service or a visit to a store will prove me correct. Or, if you're so inclined, take the ESN from a Verizon Blackberry device, go to the Verizon website and try to activate it. If you do not have a Blackberry plan it will not activate.

It's not crap....Blackberry has an agreement with verizon and vice-versa. Don't get a PDA device if you don't need it......$29.99 for the data plan is a steal, but not if you're not going to use it. You should look at some other devices, there are ways to make it pink....skinit.com is one.

Check it out.....

I fully recomend the pearl. Best phone i've ever had!!!

You both are right and wrong. When you first sign up with Verizon and buy a Pearl (or any data phone), you must initially sign up with the data package. Once the phone is activated, you can call Verizon customer service and remove the data plan. This will still allow you to use the phone and you can still text, but you can not use the internet at all. I did that with my girlfriend because she wanted the pink pearl and all she cared about was texting, but not the internet. I called verizon and it was all set, she has been using it for a week now with no problem on service.

I am going to try this. I think you can return the phone with Verizon with a certain period so the day after I get it activated, I'm going to go online and unsubscribe from the data plan. if it doesn't work, I'll just return the phone.

This is True. You use to be able to work around the system to take Off the Blackberry data plan, but the system has been fixed and there is no way to have a Blackberry without a data Plan. It is stated in the customer agreement and all over the Brochures so you can't try to fight it. It is RIM's Agreement with Verizon. Note: Other PDA's are capable of not having a data plan.

You can go Pay as you go on the data for a blackberry just like the other PDAs. However, every minute of everyday a blackberry searches for email and it can't be stopped and you will have a huge bill. Blackberries are designed for EMAIL. That is the reason for their existence. Blocking that feature works against the design of the phone. If you don't want email, get something different.

For clarification purposes...are you with Sprint or Verizon? My posts relate to the Pearl for Verizon.

I agree with you that it's "crap" but that's the way it is with Verizon. I don't mind though because Verizon is an awesome company and I get service everywhere I go.

If I'm not mistaken you have to deal with the same "crap" at Sprint. Both Sprint, Verizon and Alltel require you to have the data package for any Blackberry, this is an agreement that the carriers have with Blackberry. Also for the record Verizon's unlimited BB package is $30, not $40.

Sprint, TMobile and AT&T offer BBs without requiring a data plan, but not Verizon. The cheapest data plan is $30 a month. Unless your wife really needs it (I had the Pearl and returned it b/c I just didn't use it enough to justify the cost and the email buzzing every 30 seconds was driving me crazy...) get her a pink Venus. The Venus is awesome in any color but it would meet your pink requirement...

sorry to say but most of you are wrong here. you can have a blackberry pearl with only txt messaging on verizons network. you must activate it first with the data plan but then can call in and remove it. it has been done many times, although whats the point of doing that if you have a 'blackberry'

I don't think so. With other PDAs, that is true, not so with BB. I have been told by more than one Verizon rep that due to the way the BBs are set up, if you call Verizon and cancel the data, you're canceling everything and all you will have is a glorified calendar (I mean, the phone will turn on) with no service and you'll have to switch back to another phone. Verizon does offer cheaper unlimited data plans on the BBs though, $30 as opposed to $45 for the others.
