With the new software version, you can alter the icons...however the note pad does not appear to be one that can have an shortcut icon. Would be better than others already available (ie alarm clock).

Notepad is not one of the settable shortcuts on the v07 front-screen menu. You get software upgrades at a full-service Verizon company store. Takes about 20 minutes.
