Firmware?

Okay, I'm not a techno wizard or anything and I just got this phone as a christmas gift so I'm still learning how to use it now, so what exactly is Firmware, what does it do and do I need to update it? My phone gives me this option, but I was just wondering what that means. Can anyone help? Confused
