Unless Cingular picks up this phone the 3G wont work on there network. Only Cingular BRANDED phones have acess to the 3G network.

So im assuming cinguler/Att will pick this up.

not to sound ignorant, but why would it matter if it is cingular or not? as long as you put in cingular settings what's the difference?

😕
is that why many unlocked/unbranded HTC hermes owners easily use 3g?

i bet it'll work on their HSDPA network 😛

Wrong! My unbranded Hermes has no problem connecting to the AT&T 3g network.

You may not have Cingular Video, but who cares? Other 3G features will work as long as you have the correct SIM card. Im getting this puppy unlocked!!!

ok you may have EDGE working but from what i know, its impossible to have the 3g network access unless the phone has been branded by cingular.

The only reason why a Hermes phone might work is because cingulae carries the HTC 8525.

Call up cingular ask them i doubt im wrong. but i hope i am.

You are very wrong, but it doesn't matter. All you need is a 3G capable SIM. The K850 includes 850/1900 UMTS. It is very unlikely that SE did not have at&t in mind when they included those bands. at&t will almost certainly carry this phone.

Better yet... Show me some unlocked 3G GSM phones that support US 3G GSM Networks. I'm having a hard time finding any that support US frequencies that hasn't already been picked up by a carrier...actually the carrier at&t.

None do, i have never found one. And th reasoning behind it is that 3g is locked. That sony phone i guarentee will be branded cingular. But either way doesnt matter to me.

i originally had verizon, left to cingular, then tmobile, now back with verizon. i realized that having a great service is better than having a great phone. thats just my opinion. So im stuck with basically boring phones now. but i dont mind.

I think you have it backwards... There have been very few if any phones released that support US 3G Networks. Yes, Nokia sells several 3G GSM phones here in the US but they do not support US frequencies (850, 1900). For example, in Nokia’s US online store all the “3G” phones with the exception of the N75 support WCDMA 2100. No US Mobile phone company operates at 2100… So no, most of these unlocked 3G phones will not operate with Cingular’s 3G network. It’s not because Cingular blocks them. It’s because the mobile phone manufacture did not build the phone to support the US frequencies.

I have a Dopod C730, freshly imported from China. This phone also known as HTC s630 or an update to the t-mobile dash has triband HSDPA/HSUPA and despite no mention of cingular carrying such a device or even any talk at all of it being released in North America. (Hell this phone hasnt been released in Europe)

All that being said I get a great strong 3g connectiong, with the phone giving clear Icons when I am in a 3g area and even an HSDPA area. I have done a few speed tests with the record being 1025kb/s. If that is edge why bother upgrading the network 😳

Since at&t is the only carrier in the world that requires both 850 and 1900 for UMTS, that's hardly surprising.

You forgot Rogers and some Latin American carriers. But be that as it may, I don't blame AT&T or the FCC for this, I blame the phone makers who don't wish to support it. You can jump up and down and rant, why don't the FCC open up 2100 and I would agree with you. But it ain't happening. Samsung, LG, HTC, Dopod and Palm have no problems whatsoever providing 850/1900 umts, I'm sure the world leaders in mobile technology Nokia and SE can do the same of they so wish.

You put your AT&T SIM card in the phone, the phone registers in the network. That simple!

Nokia has a variant of the N95 that does support 850/1900mhz HSDPA, which hasn't yet beeen picked up by AT&T, and probably won't until Sprint at the very, very earliest!

But it sure would be absolutly awesome if they did pick it up.

Maybe you didnt understand. The htc Hermes. Witch is unbranded. Not the 8525. The actual HTC NON BRANDED that has nothing Cingular or AT&T on it. has no problem working on the 3g network. What allows you to connect to 3g is the SIM CARD and the phone . The network allows access though the SIM ! Calling AT&T is not going to help you cause they have NO KNOWLEDGE of anything else but phones that AT&T has in their line up. Like someone said your not going to have cingular video but who cares. If you have an account with AT&T and have a unlocked phone with 850/1900 3g frequencies it WILL WORK trust me . The reason why your not finding any phones besides the herms is because THERE HASNT BEEN ANY! Just people that have unlocked the curre...

Just to clarify - the SIM card has NOTHING to do with your ability to access 3G. The whole 3G SIM card is a MYTH. I have an OLD Blue AT&T Wireless card and I have perfect access to NEW AT&T 3G service using an 8525 (unlocked to allow the use of the old SIM Card). The new SIM cards just have more TOWER information which comes into effect mostly if you travel abroad and also have more storage capabilities for phone #'s and storring more messages.

As a matter of fact you don't even have to have a Cingular/New AT&T plan to access it - I"m using my OLD AT&T Wireless Unlimited Data plan ($24.99/mo) and have access to 3G data and YES I Have clocked it and it is FAR Superior to the old EDGE service (I've peaked at about 1mbps transfer).
