Is there any chance that Motorola will sell this phone in their online store unlocked like they do with some other phones?

I don't think so since Cingular will be carrying the V8. The V9 will probably be the unlocked version, but again Cingular could carry bothe versions.

I think you have it backward.

The V9 is the HSDPA version and Cingular is expected to carry that one.

The V8 is simply quad-band GSM, therefore it is the model most likely to be sold unlocked.

I doubt it. It would make more sense for them to just intro the V9, and save themselves the confusion and support costs of the two different SKUs with different OSes.

...not that carriers always choose the most sensible strategy, though, so who knows...

Motorola designers apparently cannot shy away from anything but the RAZR type design for almost all their phones. At least Nokia and Samsung try and succeed to innovate. Interesting how of college students surveyed 56% thought Motorola was Japanese. Shows you that their marketing people need to shape up too. 🙄
