What is the point in making a no frills 3g device?

Voice capacity.

T-Mobile desperately needs to get cheap WCDMA 1700 phones like this out there to alleviate voice capacity issues in cities like NYC, LA, and Miami, where their 1900 MHz spectrum is at max capacity and simply can't handle many more customers.

Ok that is understandable. I know that TMO has been having issues getting their 3g launched. My friends and boyfriend work there and its all that people complain about. Unfortunately, I am making the switch to them, so hopefully this wont have a big impact on me. I am willing to sacrifice for that awesome employee plan

This is a downscaled version of the AT&T (Identity crisis of Cingular) 6555. What is the problem with no frills? New York City, L.A., Chicago for instance have extremely cramped spectrum and getting a phone like this pushed being more affordable will help alleviate the problem quicker.

EDGE in NYC is nearly dead, it's almost unusuable, even att is better on EDGE
3G can also ease up data burden too

You also have to take into account in what T-Mobile want to do with 3G services. In the many regional meetings I've been to it's totally different than the other Big 3. It will be used for voice capacity first then high speed internet later. What T-Mobile WON'T do is streaming video or music downloads it's just not in their plans.

this is still in early 3G stage
but I can say the 3G in NYC is pretty good, coverage is complete wherever I am
however, once I go past the city limit, it falls back to 2G
the handoff between 2G and 3G is smooth, you can notice it, but no dropped call
the data is pretty good also, and I recommend the NYer should grab this phone if it wants to tether, it won't be disappointed
