ie if you have a good hacking community for the device OR the manufacturer wants to be nice AND your device is able to have its firmware update then its possible to make an old SD device SDHC compatible.
there is also an "inbetween" step. there are some non standard 4gb SD cards that are NOT SDHC. if your device is not SDHC compatible BUT it is capable or handling FAT32 then you can use these 4gb cards. I used them in my ZODIAC Palm PDA. It also looks like I will soon get an SDHC driver for the zodiac though just for the one slot (no one has the proprietary information on the ATI controlled slot to program it for SDHC sadly)
SDHC just means FAT32 for all real purposes. since most SD devices CAN NOT support FAT32 they can NOT support SDHC without a firmware update.
