Google Crippling My Phone?

Had the 8830 for a week, then I downloaded the gmail application and the google maps application. Both worked fine on my phone. The next day, however, my phone would not connect to the browser, and when I opened google maps the screen went black and the light turned red. The phone seemed to turn off and then reset itself. Upon turning back on I tried to make a call and the screen went black again. Later that day I receievd a phone call and the phone begain to work perfectly again (including google maps). Thought it was just a bug. Then the next day the same thing happened. I uninstalled both google apps and reinstalled the BB software from verizon, but, when I tried to make a call after that the screen went black again. Could this stem from ...

No, that is a defective phone. Get a new one from them within the 30 day period. Remember:

Get one in a regular box. Do not accept a FRU which is a field replacement unit and is re-furbished. Yu only have to take a re-furb after the 30 day period is up and you enter the warranty period.

FRU: Comes in a plain white box

NEW: Comes in a Blackberry box with all of the pictures etc.

Definitely a bad unit especially if you re-installed the handset software again.

Not all FRUs are refurbished. Also note, that most corporate stores with technicians don't even have PDAs. A phone that just came out wouldn't be refurbished... they send those brand new. I know, I'm a technician.

But yes, I would return to the store and get a new one under the 30 day Worry Free Guarantee.

Yes you are right, I forgot that the PDA's have to ship from Texas or PA and are usually new.
I had to get a 7130 replaced once and it came in the dreaded white box but it was new.
Thanks for clarifying my brain freeze.

Yeah, and there are new FRUs as well. All phones that just come out have like a 3 month period where it's nothing but brand new FRUs, no refurbished.

And sometimes there's special request shipments and stuff where they'll all be brand new (i.e. currently almost every LG-VX8500 and LG-VX8300 that have been shipping out are brand new).

But another thing that is that not all refurbished phones are bad. They actually go through more testing than brand new phones.

Thank you both for your help. I returned my phone today, and was given a new one, in a new box (not without some hassling and attitude though). I am hesitant to download google maps because of what happened to my last phone, but if this phone is working properly google maps shouldn't be a problem, right? Thanks again for any help.

I have it currently loaded on my phone and it is working fine for me. I think you just had a bad phone. It happens.

Sorry you had to be hassled but at least you got a new one.
Now if this one fails after you load Google maps, the entire world will know that is is YOU who did it....lol Just kidding, I certainly hope it does work and there is no good reason why it should fail again.

Keep us posted in case it does fail again so we can all be on the lookout for it but as I said, I downloaded the entire Google suite of product for the Blackberry, Google Search, News, Maps etc. and they all work well.

Have you tried Google Directory Assistance - now there is a fun application.
