No, you don't have to open the phone to make a call. You can access your contact lists while it's closed and scroll through. Also you can access your recent calls while it's closed. And you can also access voice command while it's closed. The only time you need to open the phone for a call is if you actually need to dial or use the keypad.
If you have the phone open for a call, you cannot slide it closed. That will hang up the call. Hope that helps.
