You can change the network protocols the phone subscribes to - GSM or TDMA, both, one or the other, etc. Go to Settings, ->Networks -> Protocol Stack -> then pick your network. This is one thing you can do to an unlocked phone. It is useful for testing signal strength for one protocol or the other or switching to TDMA when GSM is barely giving a signal but just enough for the phone to hang onto GSM.
