Re: Data Plan required? -- EXPLAINED, hopefully
From what I gather, the best option is to select the pay-as-you-go service which is required, and the same price as your typical plan.
For example, I have the 1400 min family plan. From what I understand, it would turn into the same plan and price, but with the PAYG data plan added.
Then, you call Verizon and tell them to block all data to the phone. If you don't, you'll be charged the exorbitant price of $15+ per meg. Smartphones and PDAs automatically try to update and check, so you need to call in to Verizon to tell them to block data. That way the only way you get data is through wifi.
It also sounds like doing this will disable MMS (picture messages) but not SMS (texting) because pix/flix messages count as data.
The whole thing is discussed ad nauseum at

Like many of you, I'm almost always around wifi. I like the idea of not paying for data and only using wifi for data. Hope this is helpful.
