I called Verizon's 800#, which is 800-922-0204 and was told that YES, the i760 is available. $400 for a 2 year contract but $50 off if eligible like I will be in December. It has GPS but no VZ Navigator. The first smartphone to get VZ Nav will be a Blackberry 8830, or perhaps the BB Pearl 2, I'm not sure. Date unsure. Its not clear how many more months it'll be before VZW makes its smartphones VZ Nav compatible.

Hmmmmmm....I've been kind of thinking hard about this. I plan to sit tight till next year, and get a nice Smartphone that *will* have VZ Nav., and hopefully HTC will make one that will fit the bill. Or by then the i760 will be upgraded to do VZ Nav. It has to be Windows Mobile 6 or Palm, and not Blackberry because of the so...

If it has GPS, why would you want to use VZNav when you could use a REAL GPS solution like TomTom, Garmin or even Telenav? My guess is that, like the 8830, the GPS will be locked down and reserved for VZ Navigator sometime around the end of the world.

Hi evilhomer, I've had VZ Nav on my LG 8300. It works like a charm..fast, dependable and accurate. And the antenna is right on the phone. The "real" GPS you speak of...on a smartphone you'd have to get an external GPS "puck" antenna. And pay $$ for the software. With VZ Nav I just pay $3.00 when I need it for a day or $10 a month, whichever. I think that VZ Nav is really challenging the GPS industry.

GPS on the LG 8300 and phones like it is not a "real GPS" chipset. The GPS in your phone uses your cellular towers to triangulate your position whereas real GPS uses orbiting satellites, which is faster and more accurate.

Although it's true that you need a bluetooth GPS puck on most smartphones, many of the newer models such as the HTC Tilt, the 88xx Blackberry series, etc., have a "true" GSP chip built into the handset. So there is no need to carry a separate BT device. Also, VZNavigator, though it is useful, lack many of the options you get with a true GPS software package.

Verizon has the 88xx Blackberry which DOES contain a genuine GPS chip but has (surprise suprise) disabled it for use with any true GPS software. Thus forcing yo...

Hi there, I respect what you say and you may be largely right. http://vznavigator.vzw.com/about.html says that their VZ Nav *is* GPS assisted, though partly phone-tower assisted also once a fix is obtained. I found that I have to have the device open to the sky to get a fix...it will not get a fix unless that is done. I don't know exactly how VZW uses their towers to get a fix to within yards...I think that's near impossible. Whatever!! Main thing is it works like a charm. But I agree with you...they crippled the GPS on their smartphones. People say its because they hadn't gotten their technology right yet and that's why they crippled the GPS function except for 911 call-localization.

My Motorola Q pairs up with the Garmin Mobile satellite receiver with no problem, so it's possible.

Its very likely the rep you spoke to mistaked the i760 for the i730. It happened to me a few weeks ago and again yesterday when I call the number you provided. The lady was nice and real quickly said "Yes we have that. Would you like to buy it?". I got a big chubby for a few seconds, pinched myself and thinking it cant be real, I asked her again, "You are saying you have the Samsung i760? If so, I'll take it!" She then back tracked and said, "I have the i730" She was almost ready to sell me the i730 and I then explained to her about the 760. So its NADA for the 760 for now. ☚ī¸
