I was in the VZW store last night looking at pda and smartphones. I waited an interminably long time for assistance, put up with another person walking in after me and getting waited on before me, and a sales person looking at me, going to sit down for a bit, then going to the back for awhile before finally coming back out to wait on me.
When he finally did offer to assist me, he looked extremely bored and disinterested. At this point, I was beginning to wonder if he made too much money or something.
We were discussing pricing, and when I mentioned that I wasn't interested in getting a data plan and I knew I wouldn't get the advanced device credit because of that, he tried to sell me on the idea that I could still try out the data p...

Was it near closing time? What area are you in?

No, it was about 5:30 pm.
I'm in South Central PA.
I also at another location - a kiosk in the mall - had a sales person try to tell me that the data plan was required with the purchase of ANY pda or smartphone. Makes me wonder if their compensation is more for the data plans than for the phones themselves.

I was told the same thing. Many moons ago, I had a Kyocera 7135 w/o a data plan. Worst thing I could've done. My bill matched the federal deficit level. So, you can get a pda w/o a plan. Somehow though, you get charged though the nose. Also, I'm sure the more add-ons to any new or renewed account they get paid on. 🤨

If it was a VZW direct rep, they get paid $0.00 on the phone. All compensation is based on plan, data features, and accessories. Keeps people from pushing phones on customers that they don't need. The only PDAs that REQUIRE a data feature are the blackberries. Which if you are getting a blackberry and don't want data, you're either a moron or a 12 y/o kid that wants it for a status symbol.

you do know that you can buy it get the credit then take it off before two months.

Ya couldnt you sign up for it then the next day call up VZW and be like hey i changed my mind and dont want the data pack. So you get charged 1 day prorated of the service and get you 100 credit when you bought the phone the day before. Unless im missing something??

As was stated before reps don't get paid on the phone it doesnt'e matter if it is a direct or indirect rep. Another reason is that now with 9.99 add-a-lines carriers rely on data to make a profit. Honestly the easiest thing would be to sign up for it and then call cust care when you get home. I have mentioned that to some of my customers in a dicrete way.

My understanding of the "fine print" is that if you don't subscribe to the service for 12 months, you'll be charged back for the $100 credit....unless that isn't correct?
Anyway, as a bean-counter, I can't see the sense in paying an extra $90+taxes that I wouldn't have otherwise, to get a $100 credit...

First off, I want to apologize for the imcompetance of a fellow VZW employee. WHat you described is, unfortunately more tha norm, than the exception, but I have to say that at the Store I work at, An authorized retailer, we do not and would never aloow that kind of service to happen. Again I apologize for the behavior. I know that Authorized retailers get a bad rap ( higher prices, not having stock, etc.), but most of them are alot more patient and knowledgeable of customer Service practices. My store takes care of customers #1 and then we worry about the sale. Our philosophy is that if the customers are happy, then the phones will sell themselves. This has really worked, so, do some investigation into authorized retailers before you y...
