For what it's worth
I have had the 8700 since 5/1. I see that a lot of people have had some issues. I have not. My phone doesn't get hot. May battery life seems fine (I just started on the 4th day with the initial charge. It is still one bar from being full. I'm not making a ton of calls, maybe 8 or 9 a day but I have been playing with the camera and ring tones.
I guess what I am saying is if you have any problems keep returning it until you get one that doesn't. It's no different then any other new phone. The initial shipment usually has a mixture of good and bad.

I have now become a firm believer in watching the threads and reading the reviews. My conclusion to all phones and models is the following:
1.) It takes a month for the truths to come out
2.) Price reductions and accessories manifest themselves after a month.
3.) Reviews become more creditable
