It's not too much to ask for 
You can get this phone without also having to get a data plan. These types of phones stay connected so Verizon just has to block the data for you. Customer Service can set it up.
**My contract wasn't up yet but Verizon gave me an extra $100 discount in addition to the $50 mail-in rebate and $200 online savings (from retail) just for signing up for a Data plan. If that's a discount you're eligible for you might want to try the data plan for a month and switch to a voice plan later.
