i figured it out. the software cannot deal with multiple numbers per name. 
only in the [save] [update existing] functionallity. it works fine when findin a contact using [contacts] verizon is refusing to offer money back or an alternate phone because they "have no other phone in this class" 
. I wish i could treat my customers like that and stay in business!! they say it could take two years to get a patch
