This Phone or the iPhone - Cingular should be #1 in dropped calls

I got a Helio kickflip about a month after it was released in store last summer, I loved the service, and the phone although cool and innovative, left much to be desired (size, bluetooth, a really weird camera, and upgradeable software for things like buddy beacon and google maps) the 3G was amazing, better than any other service and the phone GUI was awesome as well, but I just could keep it.

I ducked out after my trial period and signed on with Cingular and got my hands on the import version of the Sony Ericsson w810i, one of the greatest Combo phones ever (Phone/Music/Camera) I love my phone, but believe it or not, I drop more call with cingular than I ever did with Verizon or Helio.

No comes my dilemma, the only reason I stayed wi...

Cingular and Verizon's Voice and data Plans are ridiculous! I love T-Mobile's plans. Helios plans are limited.
======================================
options TMOBILE OR HELIO or Sprint:
$300 Sidekick 3 D-Wade
Monthly expense
+ $50 "Get More 1000 Plus" voice plan
+ $20 Sidekick unlimited data plan
+ $10 add-a-line (Optional for moms phone)
=$70 or 80/month

-OR-

$300 Helio Ocean
+ $60 1000 Minutes
+ $25 Data Plan
= 85/Month

-or- continue with Sprint and ONLY if I can get the Pantech Ocean to work on Sprints network and plan (currently paying 80/month with same options as t-mobile)

every once in a while i have to let loose and say something i personally believe. whatever i say below does not affect my reviews nor how i present stories:

if you can be patient, i think your best bet is to wait until we can get our hands on an ocean for review. let us see how it really works. if it works as advertised, it may be better than a sidekick3, even with the most recent software upgrade.

if it doesn't live up to expectations, then i'd say get the SK3 IF you have good t-mobile coverage where you live. unfortunately i live in SF, where t-mo has terrible coverage. i don't drop calls on t-mobile so much as not get them.

as for sprint - i don't think you'll see any advanced featurephones like the sk3 on ocean on them ever, but...

Thanks for sharing your opinion Eric, I've got no problem waiting for your reviews, in fact i'm planning on them to help me make my decision. I was just trying to feel out the sentiments of Helio and Apple fanboys.

Now, since no one addressed the iPhone in their responses to my original message does that mean that real phone gurus aren't even considering it in the same arena as the other qwerty keyboard phones? Or is that because it's so far away that there's no real way to make a comparison between the two?

The sidekick has always been intriguing to me, but SK1 and SK2 were so big, I want slim...

Well, I've been a Sprint customer for about 8+ years. All-in-all I've been pretty happy. I've considered leaving them a few times within the last couple years...mainly because I grew tired of their phone selection. However, this is the first time I truly feel like I "really might leave them" for another carrier! Especially for a device like the Ocean! But, I still think Sprint has the better plan pricing and features of any carrier. They still give you more for what you pay for IMO. I agree with Mimo that AT&T, and VZW are WAY overpriced for their data and talk plans. But, a couple things I would mention when comparing Sprint, T-Mo, & Helio is this: 1)Sprint's Night & Weekends start at 7 PM instead of 9 PM. That's an additional 2500+ "anyti...

I too have been with Sprint forever, since 1998... I have to admit their phone selection has gotten kinda soft lately. I've been a smartphone user since the Treo 300, but I also live part of the year in Osaka, Japan, and my phones that I get there constantly crush what we have over here; and I never have a "smartphone", just the middle of the road flip that plays music, takes video and pix, has GPS, has near-field RFID chip (felica), and reads QR codes.

The ocean is the closest I've seen to a phone over here that can still be a phone and do everything I need it to do. Yeah I currently carry a Treo 700wx, but I've noticed years ago, all I really is a decent phone that can be easy to text, do email (especially exchange sync), do IM on ...

I am having the same delima. Its too early to say but from what I saw at Macworld about the iphone is that its flashy but not real practical which alot of apple products appear to be. I own a Macbook and thats what worries me about getting a helio Ocean, the mac compatibilty. I can load unprotected AAC (hopefully the EMI drm-free thing works out) on a transflash as a music player and apparently there is a work around for contacts but its not seemless. Another thing I worry about is CDMA but its not really an argument since you are stuck with the carrier you buy the phone from usually, which might be the same with the iphone. The iPhone really doesn't have any better features than the Ocean at all. I think a physical qwerty pad would be more ...

i will admit cingular costs an arm and a leg but look at the benefits, they do get amazing phones like the iphone, they will also have that all new voicemail system not to mention sprint and helio only offer you there data benifits in there 3g area and everyone knows that umts is better than cdma... not to mention 1xRTT has no comparison to EDGE, plus you can still watch mobitv and other key 3g functions over the under rated edge network, so when it boils down to it whats better waiting for the ocean that well... is nothing special than a phone with a keyboard, or while waiting an extra 2 months for the next generation of mobile devices (the iphone) is within your grasp... not to mention i didn't see anywhere that you can download full lengt...

Maybe you missed the whole point. The ocean has not only a full keyboard (which will always trump some nasty on screen keyboard) but it also has a dedicated number keypad. Not to mention it costs half of what the iPhone will cost, has larger (most likely louder) speaker[S], GPS picture tagging, My Buddy beacon, integrated contact list for IM'ing, an instant search when you type from the main screen, expandable memory, a user replaceable battery.... I mean, the list goes on and on. It may be thicker, but with the pluses of the Ocean, personally I'll go with the cheaper more functional device anytime. The iPhone is typical "I don't know my way around a piece of technology" overpriced electronic-proprietary-nazi-ism.

OH yeah... and in my ...

I'm in the same boat as you are..."What should I do?! Wait for the Ocean (no release date yet) Plan on the iPhone?! (June 11)."
