Text Message Limitations on Sanyo M1

Is there a limit to how many characters you can include in a text message? I have an old LG and can only send/receive 160 characters and I'm SO TIRED of it.

Another quick question: Does the phone lag at all when going through contacts or typing a message? My phone is always two steps behind my fingers. It's annoying.

Thanks for any info I am looking to buy the phone as soon as I work out some of these questions.

The standard for SMS Text Messaging is 160 characters. This is regardless of make/model of phone or carrier. For example if you try to send a text using an email client and you exceed 160 characters, the message will be cut off.
