Mpeg4 encoding

Does anybody know of a good free/shareware program to rip DVD to MPEG4 format? There are seemingly a million programs out there, but I haven't found one that works very well. I would prefer not to have to convert to MPEG4 after the fact.

I have a program called Easy Media Creator but the only thing wrong is that ITS NOT free. Works very well.

I don't mind paying, actually. How does it work on copy-protected material? I want to transfer some Simpsons DVD's to my M1.
