Yes you can make calls when the phone is closed, if you hold down any button while it is closed it will ask you "Key Lock State Unlock Key Input?" and if you hit yes you can use all the buttons. Hit the gree to view your call hist., hit menu to get to menu, etc. It resets back to lock after you slide the phone open and closed again.
