Media Net Pkg or Unlmtd data

I heard two different stories here
One person says, can go with 19.99$ media net 200 pkg
Second person says HAVE to go with Unlimited Data for 39.99$$

who do you believe?

It's not impossible that you could configure the MediaNet plans to work, but the plan required for all the correct provisioning is the PDA connect data plan for 39.99. ☚ī¸ Whoever said Media net was either very optimistic or misinformed.

not misinformed....works perfect...use medianet with my 8125. cingular only wants you to buy more expensive plan. you use wap.cingular with media net instead of isp.cingular. it works and i have been using this way for years with various pda's.

The fact that other plans do work doesn't change the fact that it's supposed to be PDA connect - I'm not saying this to rain ony anyone's parade but as a warning: Cingular can & will charge you for being on an incorrect data plan. I used to be at the Resolution Desk, I saw it happen many times. And I had to deal with a great number of folk who were more than a little upset with getting a $500 data charge for tethering or using a PDA on a MediaNet plan.

Also, the wap/isp settings need to be correct not only on the phone, but also in Snooper, the technical provisioning system. Cingular has great many teams of system auditors that do nothing but review provisioning to make sure that people are paying for what they're getting & not getting...

well ill say this then, over 3 years of using pda on medianet and never once been "caught". i get on inet and search several pages several times a day, every day. as far as cingular knows, i use a moto v600. anytime i call they always ask if im still using that phone and i say yes.

Actually, it is VERY easy as soon as you pop your sim into a different device for cingular to know exactly what device you are using...I have seen it done, they can track EVERY single device you have ever put your SIM into and how long it was in there.

He's right - which is why the audits are kinda scary. Granted, you probably can still continue to get away with it, and I'm certainly not going to get upset on the behalf of my mega billions a year earning employed, but caveat emptor - er, rather, caveat use-or 😉

- for those Cingular employees who can, pull up an account in Telegence (any market) and go to the bill, then doubleclick on any single line in the call detail. You should be able to see the IMEI of the device used, the location, and the tower ID (among other things). It's a very handy tool.

if cingular wanted to crack down they probably could but the first step would be hiring people that actually know what they are doing. I'd venture out there to say that half, at least half of the people at that company dont know how to do the job to the fullest. I have only run into 1 CS person who knew anything. The rest were like umm, I dont know or Im not sure....if you work for a company and dont know and arent sure about basic questions, then you should not be working there...just my .02. But in the mean time, i will continue to use media works plans with my pda.

Sadly, you're correct - most of the people who are on the front lines dealing with regular customers are . . . not smart. This is less the case in the BMG channels, where corporate users require a bit more competent people on the case, but when I was at the Resolution desk (I'm one of the smart ones 😉 ), I still got a range of dumb questions from "How do I change a rate plan?" to "Where do I find bills other than the most recent one?" The bigger the company, the bigger percentage of morons working there. 🙄

In some ways, I miss not dealing directly with customers, because I liked being the person with enough brains to see what the real problem was, and to fix it. But then again, customers aren't the most fun to deal with al...

I am looking into upgrading my razor to this phone, i currently have the 19.95 for unlimited internet as well as some text messages. Anyways, when i talked to sales rep, he told me that to get the rebate, which was 100.00, you have to upgrade to a pda internet plan for 39.99. I asked him why this was and he told me this is how they recoup some of their discounts to us, keep in mind, i have to do a 2 year extension. He then told me that if i did not want the rebate, i can keep the current media pack, but again no rebate. My math tells me that i would save 390.00 over the two years. Again, this is from their store rep. 👀

This whole discussion concerns me. Both the Elk Grove, CA Cingular company store and Orem, UT Cingular company store have told me that since I am on smartphone connect for my Cingular 2125, I would just keep that for the blackjack.

I read another post that someone in Indianapolis is being told the same thing from a company store. If I and others get billed for PDA Connect, there will be a backlash, not just to the store, but leaving Cingular as my carrier.

If it is a policy, they have not communicated it very well to the front lines.

Here is what happened to me this week:

1) I bought the blackjack on Monday on an upgrade the salesman put my on the 39.99 Media Net plan. I discovered the 3G service for data did not work at home (even though the cingular web site map says I live in a 3G area) or anywhere in a 1-2 mile radius. It works everywhere else.

2) On Tuesday, 2 tech support people told me one possible reason that the plan was failing was because I was on the wrong data plan. Also, Billing told me if I did not switch to the PDA plan, I would incure data charges. I bitched that had I not been misled into buying a phone with a cheap but incorrect data plan, and because the service was not working at home. A Billing supervisor offered to give me a $10 monthly credi...

The Blackjack requires the 39.99 PDA connect because it offers a full web browser which would be limited by the addition of ANY media net plans. Included in the PDA connect is unlimited access not only to the web or to email, but also to Cingular Video (which is awesome). There was some initial confusion because the version of Windows on the phone is the smartphone version which would normally require the 19.99 media, however with the web browser and with Cingular Video, the 19.99 is not sufficient. This phone is incredible and I would recommend it to everyone.

Checkout CSP resolution #71849 - PDA connect is the plan. Who is this Cingular Executive? Does this person know anything about data provisioning, or do they just deal with phones? Read the rest of the thread for the discussion on how the MediaNet actually DOES work, but it shouldn't - Cingular officially requires PDA connect for QWERTY phones running an OS. Yes, the other plans MAY work, but there's no guarantee they will, and no one should promise that MediaMax or a Medianet plan will work when PDA connect is what is actually required.

Ok, so Cingular "says" PDA Connect is required. But why not SmartPhone Connect, like the Cing 3125? According to Samsung's website, the Blackjack is a "smartphone", which would mean the OS is the same as the 3125, right? Why should having a Qwerty keyboard require an entirely different data plan; it's not a PDA...so why require PDA Connect?

I have not gone through all of these posts, so the matter may have already been answered, Smartphone Connect is the correct option. That is directly influenced by the software on the phone, in this case, smartphone WM 5.0. Here's a little breakdown -

Telephones with WAP/XHTML/ETC. browser only require a medianet package, due to slightly smaller bandwidth requirements.

Smartphones, such as HTC 3125, 2125, and in our case, the Blackjack, only require Smartphone Connect packages. These tend to run the same in price as medianet plans, but allow for higher bandwidth access, with the addition of a full Internet Explorer browser built in.

Only PDA's require the higher priced data packages. The reason for this is, again, higher bandwidth a...

After checking out Cingular's website, they have this phone classified as a PDA. When you click on the services tab, under data they have a 19.99 plan and a 39.99 plan which are exactly the same as the PDA connect plans. That sucks and will probably be what keeps me from purchasing this phone.

I'd like to see Cingular try to win a court case against a customer for this since they don't even have any clue what is what. Plus there is the fact that the Blackjack IS NOT A PDA!!!! So why would I need to by a PDA plan? To be a PDA it would have to have the full WM5 version, not the SE version. Cingulars own site very cleary states the phone is a "smart phone". Cingular is just trying to milk as much $$$ out of their dumb customers as possible.

PDA connect. Soooooo many people make the mistake of putting the wrong plan on thier pda. There are actually very few phones that use a smartphone plan, and this isn't one of them. Also, if you do not put your device on the right plan, you will be charged pay per use for your data. It may not happen now, it may not happen for a long time, but it will happen. These PDA plans were designed for this type of device, and it's actually just a computer glitch that you're able to add anything else.

It's all a load of crap. A rep told me the prices differ because smartphones can't handle certain types of data and that's why the plans for them are less. The Network guy at my job (I work for a software company) bought the 8125 & broke down why the pricing plans were a load of hooey (data is data PERIOD) and they let him have the $19.99 unlimited plan instead of the $39.99 plan. I don't know if he forfeited any rebates by doing so. I also don't know how long he had to negotiate to get the lower-priced plan. Maybe his rep was a wimp. 😁

I'm of 2 minds about this whole thing: Personally, I'm quite happy to see people get away with stuff like this - Cingular's data plan options are far too complicated, and ridiculously (and unnecessarily) expensive. As an individual consumer, I think it's cool that people can use the MediaNet plan with PDA devices, and that rebates will apply despite being ineligible according to the fine print.

As an employee, I have to make sure the facts are stated correctly: You're supposed to have PDA connect for any QWERTY smartphone/PDA device (see CSP resolution 71849, and read the data device definitions & categories). While it is certainly possible to use a MediaNet plan, unless you are the one actually provisioning the plan in the system, you ...

well why is it that cingy reps sell medianet plans with qwerty smartphones and pda's? i can tell you that not a single rep has ever told me using medianet with a pda was illegal. When i got done with my bb service with the 8700c, i got an 8125 with medianet at a store and the rep didnt say it wasnt allowed and they still gave me the rebate even though it says 39.99 pda connect plan.

I know that most reps dont know much about what they sell but why is that there is such confusion? If you have CSP numbers that clearly state how to do things, why dont reps enforce those? That's my issue, some enforce it and some dont. If person A is getting the wrong plan for less price then Im gonna fight to get the cheaper plan too.

The reason this happens is because people are inherently LAZY. It's just human nature to seek the path of least resistance. If a rep can put a $29.99 plan on for a consumer and make them happy, they will do it to 1. make the $$, and 2. not risk causing a potentially uncomfortable situation in which THEY must explain WHY the consumer has to be on a higher data plan. It's just easier and less hassle...it's the american way...unfortunately!
