Phone Powering Off During Charging

I am having a problem with my phone powering off during charging. I plug my phone in and after some time it decides to shut off. It does not seem to power down, just switch off and continue charging.

I have contacted Verizon and they replaced the phone stating they have not heard about the problem. The new phone has done the same thing. Samsung says they are not aware of the problem but suggested I replace the charger. Yesterday I replaced the charger and still the same problem.

Verizon now seems to think there may be a software error... but because it is so new they have no other answer. They say when there is a new software update I can bring it in to be updated.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I don't have that problem exactly but my phone will restart on its own. Sometimes I am on the internet and all of a sudden the screen will go blank and phone will restart. Also sometimes I take phone out of pouch to use it and it is locked meaning it restarted on its own. Not a big problem but if there is a fix I would't mind getting it.

Hey I have the same exact problem. I leave it charging overnight and when I wake up the charge is complete but the phone is off. I am having my 3rd phone sent to me now so if yours is doing this and mine is doing this the problem might be the only thing that they haven't tried which is our batteries. We need to combine forces because when I called Samsung and Verizon today they claimed they have never heard of this problem. If I could reference your account and you mine as a defence I do not think we should have trouble getting replacement batteries.

Not for nothing but I don't think there is a problem with any of your phones. I also have the U740 and I have gone through many makes a...

Thanks for the input but I have to disagree. This is not a feature at all. This is a defect. If it was a feature that would be great for those who like it or don't to turn it on or off. However I always have charged my phones overnight and this is the first one that turns off. If I were to receive a call during that time it would probably be an emergency thus it is important to be able to receive calls while charging. Also, I use my phone as an alarm clock. I first noticed the problem when I had to charge it at night for the first time (the battery was so good in the beginning I did not need to charge much at all). I woke up late because the alarm didn't go off. My mother told me that she had tried to call me and it went straight to...

Well, in that case I can see where your coming from especially if you use it as an alarm clock that would bother me too. I just returned a 9900 after going through 3 of them because if I put the phone in tones only mode and using voice dial I would have to press the end key 3 times to end the call or else it would just keep on being connected. I guess there is no perfect phone out there. Too many features are packed into these phones which is great for technology but bad for performance and reliability. I remember the Motorola Star Tac and Vader days where I bought one phone and never had to exchange it. I not only put the blame on the manufacture but more on Verizon's part because they don't test these phones thoroughly before releasing th...

It took a while, but I figured I could not be the only one. This is definately not a feature...

I do not believe it is the battery since both of the phones have had new batteries. I have also exchanged a few chargers (which Samsung suggested) and this has not solved it.

For the time being I have just been charging my phone in the morning when I wake up. This is honestly the only problem I have had with this phone.

It is funny how they say this is the first they have heard of the problem since I have spoke to a lot of people at both places and it seems you have too. I cannot imagine no one else has called about it too!

thanks for everyones help...I have no clue what the problem is. I'm testing the 3rd phone now. I will see how that goes. I was hoping it was a simple battery or charger issue but I guess not. It really is the only problem I have had with the phone as well.

3rd phone = same problem. How can this not be a battery or charger issue if 3 phones that I get have the same rare problem that most other people are not getting.

Maybe something in the wiring of your house...try charging it at work or a friends house. Maybe a feature of to much voltage automatically turns it off. 3 phones with the same problem? def not the phone...just a thought

Of course they will tell you this is the first they have heard of the problem. Imagine if they admit there is a problem and no solution. How would they respond? Ever notice the only time they admit of a problem is if theere is already a fix or a fix in the works.

Well, It happened again with the brand new phone but I think I know why. I would like a test dummy who is willing to do a couple things.
1. Set a video from memory card as your wallpaper on the main screen.
2. Set your display theme to Amoeba
3. Charge your phone with it on WHILE YOU SLEEP!

One of these changes caused my phone to do this. I might have figured out the problem before Samsung and Verizon. If this is the case it appears to be a software issue with those settings. If scottandrew75 comes back to tell me if he had any of these settings we can narrow it down!

All phones have software issues I have not seen one phone out there that does not come with a software glitch that is why I returned my 9900.

Hello Sandler. Funny I was thinking that possibly some of my settings were causing this also. I do have a video from my memory card set as the wallpaper on my main screen. My display is set to My Desk.

It does not matter when I charge my phone (it shuts off at some point).

Yea I was able to confirm...at least for me that the problem was a video from memory as my background.

Hi,
Does anyone have the power off while charging, without using a wallpaper animation or picture from the memory card? or simply no memory card?

Did any one figure out what is the problem and how to fix it?

Hi there,
I have a work around for the Samsung u740 phone powering off during recharge. Just plug your phone in for a recharge and call it and let it ring and then hang up.
The phone front display will read "1 MISSED CALL". The phone will not do the "stupid power off trick" while it is displaying that message.
This works for me and I have an animation as wallpaper. Please let me know, if it works for you.

So, what if you set an alarm and charging it at the same time. Would the alarm still go off?

Hi,

According to sandler743 the phone shuts off even with an alarm set.

My u740 gets hung up trying to read the memory card after power on. This causes a PLAYER ERROR, when I try to use the mp3 player
and kills any (wallpaper animation or image) that was set if the the image or animation was on the memory card.

I have a work around for the wall paper problem. Put the wallpaper animation or image on the phone memory, instead of the memory card. This can be done by using the move file function.

To get the PLAYER ERROR to go away, remove the memory card and reinsert it. This is one quirky phone.

So is it just a glitch with certain settings?
I have no intention of having an animation as a wallpaper or some of the other settings you mentioned, but I'm definitely interested in this phone for my upgrade. My only problem is the fact that my cell phone is my one and only alarm. Has been for years and if it powered off during the night when I was charging it, that would cause me to be late, which isn't good. lol.
