Front Screen Problems

I can't figure out how to get the front screen to turn on when i push a button while the phone is closed. in order for the front screen to turn on i have to open the phone. Does anyone know how to get that to work? I mainly use it so i can see the time and stuff.

you have to hold the side buttons down for a few seconds for it to come on. most samsung phones work like that.
