Dissapointed

I'm excited to see RIM rolling out new features on a slim phone at a great price. But why did they feel the need to move away from the thumb wheel on the side?

It seems this phone is targeted to potential new bb users, and that's understandable. But when will RIM roll out a phone that is a really great upgrade for bb 7200 users (full keyboard, thumbwheel, and great features)?

I don't know how this phone can be such a dissappointment in comparison with that series of old Black Berry devices. This is a, and no this can't be stressed enough, HUGE HUGE HUGE deal for not even new bb users, but any phone consumer in the market for an email phone. Tell me there's no better thing for RIM lovers than a black berry device similar in size to the ever-droolled upon RAZR (not baggin on the RAZR don't worry, i got 2 different kinds of em to begin with sadly enough), with a decent camera, good bright screen, and new and more user friendly and easy to play with software. I've played with it for a couple hours, and was far from the word dissappointed with the device. People put such faith in their beloved RIM devices that they ar...

I would definitely want to purchase this phone... it has everything that I want - except for Wi-Fi. If it had that, I'd be all over it; Wi-Fi's something that I've learned to need, and I can't exactly buy a new phone that doesn't have it (I'm coming from an SDA). Perhaps the next one will include Wi-Fi, plus everything here... I'd be freaking crazy about that.

Take care. see u.

I'm excited about the release of the "pearl" tomorrow because hopefully the 8700G will drop in price. Then I'll upgrade from my 7230. I'm a full keyboard bb lover too, but I must agree with "strangerthanfiction" (ya Bad Religion fan ;-) )Change is not always a bad thing. Look at Apple ;-) some "diehard macheads" are pissed that they switched to intel processors, but I believe that's the only reason that I can now sync my BB with my G4s. It made the rest of the world wake up!!!

Like most of you geeks on here, I've been doing plenty of research on all carriers and phones and T-Mobile has some serious game up their sleeve. I've been told of beefed up versions: BB8705 (t-mobile), BB8707 (cingular) and BB8703 (verizon) coming out late this Fal...

Thats great news about the 8700 models. I'm hoping big time that they keep the thumb wheel on those models.

The 8705 is exactly the same as the 8700 but is hearing aid compatible.
Also, I do not think this device is just for new blackberry users... I develop apps for the Blackberry platform and ordered my 8100 first thing this morning! Granted, the full keyboard on my 8700 will be missed, but it's worth it to not have to also carry around my Nokia 3250 so that I can also have a decent camera phone and mp3 player with me.

You see, camera&mp3 in a phone has never been important to me. Besides, I have an iPod and a digital elph. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a device that is a great phone, camera, Mp3, etc..all in one, but it just wont happen. Look at all the "all in one" printers. They're always a HUGE dissapoinment. RIM does what they do well and that's that. I tested the pearl for a moment today and was very impressed with it. I actually prefer the "pearl" track-ball over the jog-wheel! Immediately, I was won over by it's lightning fast response and effortless results. The new pearl is a beauty, but I'm gonna test the 8705 before I make my final decision for an upgrade...

The 8705 is exactly like the 8700 except hearing aid compatible, so you do not need to wait for the release of the 8705 before testing it :-)

Price Katrina. It's all about the price. T-Mobile told me that there wasn't much to the BB8705, but they didn't say that the price of the 8700g wouldn't drop after Sept 18th. The 8700g will go down in price eventually and that's when I'll upgrade. At this point I feel that I need to stop being an early adopter (even though it's painful) and stay behind the curve a bit. But for you early adopters...Let's not forget about the Blackberry 8800 (the next big upgrade), which wont be released till next year. It's basically a pearl with a qwerty keboard and will have WIFI!! :-)
oops! I forgot this is supposed to be about the pearl, later...

just a side note - id be careful in assuming a BB bought and sold by a carrier will include WiFi. Just take a look at all the main companies - Cingular, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc. and i cannot even count on both my hands and feet how many devices could/should have had WiFi and that feature was removed before bought from the manufacturer.

In response to your side note, strangerthanfiction48, I noticed that the Nokia "E61" is now coming out for Cingular as the "E62", but the WIFI has been removed! You are correct my friend. I do believe this is a conspiracy 👀
Either buy an overpriced unlocked phone or be at the mercy of your carrier and their proprietary methods...

I believe RIM moved away from the thumb wheel/back button on the side to make the device thinner. Not sure about future models with full keyboards.

I was thinking it was cause the wheel might not be convenient for lefties, but who knows. The Motorola Q has a thumb wheel so unless its thinner than the Q i don't think that should have made a difference.

Yea the thumb wheel would've been great on this phone. I'm currently testing it for Cingular, they created a touch sensative trackball on the center of the phone. It's descent and easy to move around with, but when going through messages, a thumb wheel would've been a lot better.

i'm an RSR at a t-mobile store and i'm also trying to decide whether to switch to the 8100 for my SDA. The Pearl is thinner, lighter, wider screen and SureType is nice, plus the BB email application, which I really don't need. The SDA has wifi, nice full screen video playback, and more apps/games/modifications available. It hinges on your need for push email vs. your need for wifi, i'd say.

From what i understand, they are moving away from the wheel on the rght and moving to the center ball for the number of left handed customers that have a difficult time using the right handed wheel. They will come out with a simular device (as far as features are concerned) with the full keyboard. An upgrade to the 8700. I wouldn't look for the Wheel in future models though.
