Playing music on the Pearl ?

OK so I finally got the time to DL some mmusic into my 1GB SD card in my Pearl and the music was .wma files but they don't even show up on the phone. Does music have to be of a certain format to be able to be seen and played on my Pearl ? If so, what format and can .wma , mp3 and other types of music and video files be converted to mp4 type (if that is the type that is needed) ?

mp3s and mp4s or non-protected m4as(itunes) - cannot play songs purchased from iTunes but can play songs ripped from CDs using iTune player on PC
