No, the OEM Data Cable packaged with the Samsung A500 is only used to tether the handset with your PC/laptop to be used a modem for data access via the internet and requires a Sprint Phone As a Modem/PAM data.

To use the USB cable to transfer data to/from the phone go to Settings/Mass Storage/Connect to PC. On my Mac, the phone showed up as an external hard drive and my movies, pictures, etc. was there...

Anybody know how to transfer contacts? Maybe a different thread about this?

I do apologize. LOL! I was think of my Samsung A920. Yes, the M500 does support Mass Storage Transfer via the included USB Data Cable as well as being able to use it for a PAM. As far as data contacts are concerned, DataPilot is pretty good software.
