buy just a Sprint plan with this, or must you buy a nextel plan?????? say you just want voice and want a rugged phone, is it possible without signing up for PTT?

Thanks

For the time being, its an iDEN device as far as Sprint is concerned, so you have to have an Nextel account to get it. Depending on the plan you're on, you can just leave the PTT as a pay-per-use feature and just use the phone part. The Nextel plans are for all intents and purposes exactly the same as Sprint's, so I don't see why you couldn't use it without the PTT.

So say you are going to be a new customer, its a good way to go if you don't care about EVDO, still want good CDMA voice and have the option of PTT, do you agree?

The thing you need to worry about is roaming areas. The ic502 only uses the 1900 MHz band for CDMA, so it won't be able to roam in areas where only 850 Mhz is available (which actually are a lot of areas). If you are always in areas where 1900 MHz service is available, then there shouldn't be a problem purchasing this phone, but if you're going to want a wider area for voice calls, then I'd would suggest not getting a hybrid.

The dual modes only, as of right now, use 1900 GHz on the CDMA with roaming agreements and IDEN with 800 MHz (but for PTT).

Qchat will be in 08 so that will be a year so they need to slowly bring over those customers to the CDMA network so that it will be an easier switch.

The major issue i see is that with nextel the phones came with push to talk. Now since nextel is converting to cdma, push to talk is flushed down the toilet since no one on the cdma side has a phone that is PTT. The answer is yes they are there but go to class today and ask everyone who has sprint do you have PTT on your phone most will say no. So the questions is qchat a special program that any phone can accept or do you have to special phone. If its a special phone then pretty much kiss PTT bye bye accept for business of course. The key pointe of nextel was that everyone had a ptt no matter what that why people bought nextel was for the walkie.

Not necessary kissing PTT away because remember they do have Qchat coming soon, which they can offer to the business segments and the consumer segment with Boost.

"Sprint will initially roll out the hybrid service and ic502 phone in Baltimore, Boston, Central and Southern Jersey, Delaware, East Michigan, Jacksonville, LA Metro, Long Island, Miami/West Palm, New York City, Northern and Southern Connecticut, Northern Jersey, Orange County, Orlando, Philadelphia Metro, Providence, Riverside/San Bernardino, San Diego, Southwest Florida, Tampa, Toledo, and Washington DC. Other markets will come in 2007. The phones will work nationwide, of course; you just won't be able to buy them everywhere. Service plans will look like existing Nextel plans, with new $5-per-month unlimited Sprint mobile-to-mobile and $15-per-month Sprint Vision optional add-ons."
